WWE Universal Championship announced on RAW

A new WWE Universal Championship was announced on the Monday, July 25th, 2016 episode of RAW. The new title belt was hyped up as Commissioner Stephanie McMahon and General Manager Mick Foley’s answer to SmackDown Live having the WWE World Heavyweight title on its roster and RAW not having a major belt. During the intro of the latest RAW, the commissioner and GM had all roster members assembled on stage and spoke of the new title, announcing how it would be decided.¬†

At Battleground on Sunday night, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns of RAW challenge SmackDown’s Dean Ambrose in the Triple Threat match for the WWE World Heavyweight title. However, the two RAW members failed to win. That brought about the need for a major championship to also be on the Monday night¬†program. The WWE Universal Championship was established as the answer and was given its name to pay tribute to the fans, aka the “WWE Universe.”

A total of nine men would be part of a series of matches to determine the champion. Stephanie and Foley said that there would be two Fatal Fourway matches on the show, with the winners of these two matches competing in a singles match for the RAW main event. The winner of that singles match would go on to face RAW’s No. 1 draft pick, Seth Rollins, at the WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view in August.

The first Fatal Fourway match consisted of a foursome of Cesaro, Finn Balor, US Champion Rusev and Kevin Owens. While all four men gave their all and seemed like they would get the win at one point, it was ultimately the newcomer, Finn Balor, who hit his Coup De Grace on US Champion Rusev and pinned him for the big win.

The second Fatal Fourway match featured Roman Reigns, Chris Jericho, Sami Zayn and Sheamus. It was Roman Reigns collecting the win in this match, after he hit several moves on Chris Jericho including a huge spear takedown. That gave Reigns the pinfall win and sent him to the main event against former NXT star Finn Balor.

In a huge main event, Roman Reigns and Finn Balor battled it out with the winner getting to move on to the big championship match at SummerSlam. The match some multiple near falls with Reigns looking ready to win down the stretch. He hit a Superman Punch at one point and several powerbombs, but couldn’t get the winning pinfall. Reigns tried on another big Spear move but Balor countered it with a Slingblade. Moments later, Balor hit his finisher Coup de Grace to shock the fans with the big pinfall win!

Now Balor will face Seth Rollins at SummerSlam 2016 with the winner of that match winning the new WWE Universal Championship. It will mark the historic first-ever reign for that newest belt that has been added to the ranks of WWE. Summerslam will take place on Sunday, August 21st from the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York.
