Welcome to the WWE Smackdown results for the Tuesday, September 6, 2016 episode. This week’s installment was held at the Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska. Among the superstars in action were The Usos, The Hype Bros, American Alpha, The Miz, Apollo Crews, Nikki Bella, Becky Lynch and Carmella. Below are all of the latest match-by-match Smackdown results and highlights for this week’s show.
The opening segment featured Daniel Bryan talking about the Backlash PPV for Sunday where a new women’s champion will be crowned for the show. He said it will be a Six Pack Challenge elimination match for the title. On tonight’s show, Bryan said there will be a six-woman tag match but right now they’ll have a forum to speak. He had Becky Lynch come out first and talked her up as the top draft pick. Lynch spoke about her ride in the WWE thus far but was interrupted by Natalya who came out to trash talk.
Next out was Alexa Bliss to call them the “real whiners of WWE,” and then Carmella came out to interject. Becky tried to get the three heels to turn against each other, but they decided against it and were going to take her down. Nikki Bella and Naomi rushed to the ring. Nattie was able to sucker punch Nikki but then Nikki’s teammates for later cleared their opponents from the ring.
Backstage, Bryan and Shane McMahon talked up the women’s tag match for later. The Miz entered with Maryse to complain about them being more concerned with the women’s title than his. Bryan told Miz those women in the ring were willing to fight but Miz walked away when he was challenged to a fight by Ziggler last week. Bryan booked Miz to face Ziggler at Backlash with the title on the line, or else he can hand over the belt now.
The Miz defeated Apollo Crews via pinfall in a non-title match. Dolph Ziggler was on commentary. Late in the bout, Miz escaped from Crews in the ring and ended up near the announcers’ table. He slapped Ziggler, causing Dolph to get up. Crews tried to get a baseball slide, but Miz saw it coming and shoved him into Ziggler. Back in the ring, Miz got Skullcrushing Finale for the win. Post-match, Ziggler had Miz’s belt and got in the ring after Miz had left. He told him to come in and try to take the belt. Instead, Miz directed Maryse to, so she went in the ring to retrieve the belt for him.
They had a recorded video promo from Bray Wyatt rocking in his chair. He talked about “The Viper” and said that he has no morality or conscience spending his days terrorizing men. He said mankind evolved and adapted. Wyatt called himself the evolution of man and a God, adding that Orton will become his prey.
Alexa Bliss, Natalya & Carmella defeated Nikki Bella, Becky Lynch & Naomi via submission. Carmella tagged in after Nikki had been knocked down. Nikki regained momentum and hit her finisher on Carmella, but the heels broke up the pinfall. A brawl broke out with most of the women at ringside. Carmella was able to put her Code of Silence submission on Nikki in the ring to get the win.
American Alpha defeated The Usos via pinfall in the Smackdown Tag team tournament semifinals. Before the match, the two teams shook hands. After the bell rang, The Usos hit a sneak attack on Alpha from behind. Alpha quickly fought back to gain the advantage and hit a finisher on Jimmy for a quick win. Post-match, The Usos shook hands again and then attacked Alpha. Jason Jordan got sent out of the ring and Usos continued to attack Chad Gable’s leg.
Randy Orton did a backstage interview. He talked about a man, a snake and a rabbit. He said the man remembers snakes are more afraid of you, than you are of them. He said a man picked up a rabbit and became confident, but then the snake struck. He said the snake wanted the rabbit but saw the man and figured he could have them both.
Fandango did an in-ring segment where he said Tyler Breeze wasn’t with him tonight due to being in Dubai to seek silk for their new fashion line. He invited a woman into the ring to dance with him. He acted unimpressed by her moves and dismissed her. He asked if anyone out there has a passion for dance and fire in their belly. Kane’s pyro entrance hit and he came to the ring. Fandango tried to show him how to dance, but Kane wasn’t having it and chokeslammed him.
Heath Slater and Rhyno defeated The Hype Bros via pinfall to advance to the WWE Tag Team tournament finals. Slater’s seven kids were shown near ringside watching the match. Early on, Hype Bros had control with Slater and Rhyno down at ringside before a commercial break. Later, Slater was being isolated by Hype Bros. He eventually broke free for the hot tag. Rhyno came in and drew cheers as he hit a spine buster on Ryder for the near fall. Mojo broke it up. It came down to Rhyno hitting a big spear for the win later. Slater celebrated at ringside with his kids. Slater and Rhyno will take on American Alpha for the title at Backlash on Sunday.
Renee Young was on the Talking Smack set and mentioned that Chad Gable is now questionable for Sunday’s tag team match due to the injury he suffered. She said Shane McMahon will join her and Daniel Bryan later on Talking Smack to discuss it. The Usos came out and complained about all they’ve done for the WWE Universe, yet the fans cheered for American Alpha tonight instead. They said they’ve busted their asses for six years trying to get respect, but now they’re done with that.
The final segment featured an in-ring face-to-face between WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dean Ambrose and challenger AJ Styles. Ambrose presented Styles with an old bowling trophy telling him that’s the only trophy he’ll ever get from him.
Styles talked about how Ambrose acts like everything is a joke and that he obviously doesn’t know about him if he’s treating him like a joke. Ambrose had footage of last week’s incident played where he crotched Styles on the top rope and bounced him on it. Styles asked if Ambrose thought it was funny and Ambrose told him he did, and so did the fans.
Styles brought up how he doesn’t need some silly trophy from Ambrose. He pointed out the John Cena armband he was wearing and called that his trophy. He reminded Ambrose he beat Cena in a match at SummerSlam and Cena took him seriously. Styles told Ambrose he’s “no John Cena.”
Ambrose said he was damn right he’s not Cena. He talked about taking men past their breaking points. He said the only time they were in the ring together, he beat Styles. He vowed to do it once again on Sunday and that they don’t give trophies to the face that comes in “second place.” Styles kicked Ambrose between the legs and then broke the trophy over his knee. He trash talked Ambrose some as the commentators hyped up Backlash for Sunday.
