Welcome to the latest WWE SmackDown results for the July 4th, 2017 episode. Tonight’s installment was held at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. It included the return of John Cena to SmackDown as well as an Independence Day Battle Royal. The winner of that match would become No. 1 contender to face Kevin Owens for the US Title at Battleground. Here are the latest results for WWE Smackdown from Phoenix.
John Cena came out to the ring and got dueling chants of “Let’s Go Cena” and “Cena sucks.” He talked about not being a part timer but an “all-timer” and will compete on both Raw and SmackDown. Rusev came out to interrupt carrying a Bulgarian flag. He said Cena had two months of commercials for his return but Rusev had none for his. He called the USA and the American Dream “jokes.” Cena ended up challenging Rusev to a flag match for tonight but Rusev said he would compete in it, but not tonight. He left the stage as fans chanted “U S A.”
Backstage, Daniel Bryan told AJ Styles and Chad Gable that the champion Kevin Owens objected to having two men he’s defeated already in the battle royal tonight. Bryan said they’d go one-on-one to determine who is in the battle royal.
AJ Styles defeated Chad Gable via pinfall. The match went over eight minutes. Late in the contest, AJ went for the Styles Clash but Gable escaped it to put on an ankle lock. Styles managed to reverse into the Calf Crusher. Gable escaped that move and both men were limping a bit. Styles connected a Pele Kick and then the Phenomenal Forearm moments later for the win. Post-match, Styles helped Gable to his feet and they nod at each other in respect.
Carmella and James Ellsworth came to the ring for the “Carmellabration.” Carmella talked about the fans doubting she could win again, and said now she’ll decide when she faces Naomi for the title. Naomi’s entrance takes place. The champ congratulates Carmella for the win and told her she’ll be ready. She tells Ellsworth someone wants a word with him. Daniel Bryan made his entrance to “Yes” chants. Ellsworth started to talk and Bryan cut him off saying he’s banned from the arena, fined $10,000 and suspended 30 days without pay. Bryan said if Ellsworth disobeys him, Carmella forfeits the MITB briefcase.
Naomi defeated Lana via submission to retain the WWE “Raw” Women’s Championship. The match lasted just 10 seconds with Naomi quickly putting her hold on Lana and forcing her to tap out.
Dash Fuentes started to interview Shinsuke Nakamura backstage. Baron Corbin attacked him with the briefcase and then asked if he really thinks he’s scared of him. Nakamura replied “Yes” as officials came in to separate the two superstars.
They had a rap battle between The New Day and The Usos. Rapper Wale hosted it. Both teams had some entourages with them. The two sides delivered some rhymes back and forth with disses and insults mixed in. At one point, one of The Usos said Woods is a “Rated R Superstar” which got some surprised looks from the fans. Eventually, The Usos started trying to attack New Day so Wale disqualified them and declared New Day winners of the rap battle.
Aiden English defeated Randy Orton due to disqualification. English was singing ahead of the match when Orton interrupted to come to the ring. English took exception and attacked Orton. He tossed him out of the ring and then into the steel steps before a break. The Viper made a comeback after commercials but eventually used part of the ring steps to smash against English outside the ring. He tossed English back in and hit the RKO on him. As Orton celebrated, Jinder Mahal’s music hit and he came out to cut a promo on the people of the USA being prejudiced because of how he talks or what he says. Mahal ran down the Punjabi Prison match and said if he would lock all the people in there if he could. He went to speak in his language and Orton told him to shut up. He said nobody likes him not because of how he talks or looks but because he’ll always be a “jackass.”
Backstage, Renee Young tried to interview Maria and Mike Kanellis about their message of love. They were talking about it when suddenly a noise came from over to the side. Sami Zayn was shown stretching and had knocked over a pipe. He went over and apologized to them and said he respects their message about love. He quoted the Huey Lewis and the News song “Power of Love.” His music hit and he said he had to go for the battle royal. Mike asked Maria to continue speaking. She told him “not now” angrily. Mike agreed and said “the mood has been ruined.”
AJ Styles won the Independence Day Battle Royal. Kevin Owens was on guest commentary. Among the competitors were Breezeango, The Colons, Dolph Ziggler, Mojo Rawley, Zack Ryder, Tye Dillinger, Ascension, Luke Harper, Erick Rowan, Sami Zayn, Kalisto, Jason Jordan, and AJ Styles. Ziggler was an early elimination ahead of a commercial break. Rowan tossed out Breeze but Fandango caught him and rolled him back in. Rowan grabbed Breeze again and tossed him out to the floor. Moments later, he tossed out Kalisto onto Breezeango. In another spot, Mojo and Ryder nearly went at it, but Rowan knocked them both down. Rowan was about to eliminate Ryder but Mojo came over to make a save. From there, the duo eliminated Rowan. Moments later, Rawley tossed Ryder out, shocking his tag team partner. Mojo got eliminated soon after.
It came down to Sami, Tye Dillinger, and AJ Styles as the final three. Dillinger hit the Tye Breaker on both guys and then went for a double elimination near the ropes. Zayn was able to backdrop Dillinger out of the ring for the elimination. Styles and Sami battled for the win. Zayn had control and went for the Helluva Kick but Styles avoided it and Zayn fell onto the apron. Zayn and Styles battled with Sami on the apron. Sami tried for a suplex multiple times but Styles was able to blast him and Zayn fell to the floor.
Post-match, Kevin Owens rushed into the ring with the US title belt and began to attack Styles viciously. Styles was able to hit a Pele Kick out of nowhere to recover, then set up for a Styles Clash. Owens managed to escape and fled up the ring. Styles picked up the US title belt to hold it for a bit before SmackDown went off the air.
