Welcome to the WWE SmackDown results for the Tuesday, January 9th, 2016 episode of the weekly professional wrestling program. This week’s show came from Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. Among the superstars in attendance for the latest event were John Cena, AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, The Miz and more. The latest installment featured the official contract signing between Cena and Styles for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match coming up at Royal Rumble. Also, Dean Ambrose was scheduled to face The Miz for the Intercontinental Championship. Below are all of the quick results for Tuesday’s Smackdown show.
The opening segment featured The Miz and Maryse coming out to talk up being the “it couple” who are the ratings boosters for SmackDown. Footage was shown of the recent events including Miz’s comments to Renee Young and Dean Ambrose attacking Miz during an interview.
Miz demanded Renee come out to give him an apology for slapping him and setting him up for an attack from Ambrose last week. He made more remarks about her sacrificing her integrity for Dirty Deeds with Ambrose and suggested Renee’s cozy relationship with Daniel Bryan is what helped Dean get his IC title shot tonight. Ambrose came out and went to go at Miz, but Maryse stood in his way. She slapped Ambrose in the face. Ambrose was stunned for a moment and Miz left the ring. Ambrose got on the mic and said Maryse hits way harder than Miz does so the hard part of the night is over. He and Miz had a staredown as Miz backed up the ramp.
Baron Corbin defeated Dolph Ziggler via pinfall. The match lasted nearly 17 minutes. In the closing moments, Ziggler ducked a lariat from Corbin and hit a ZigZag for the near fall. He hit some followup punches in the corner, but the ref pulled him off. Corbin made his comeback and hit End of Days for the win. Post-match, Corbin tried to get back in the ring with a chair but Kalisto came down to make a save. After he ran off Corbin, Ziggler yelled at him and blasted Kalisto with a kick saying he never needed anyone’s help.
Becky Lynch defeated La Luchadora via submission. Becky had control late in the match but Luchadora fled to the outside. She crawled under the ring. Suddenly, another Luchadora crawled out from under the opposite side and got in the ring to attack Becky. Lynch regained control against the new Luchadora and put her down for the DisarmHer making her tap out. Post-match, Becky went over and grabbed Luchadora’s mask to rip it off, revealing it was Alexa Bliss. The other Luchadora got back in the ring to attack, with Becky trying to gain the advantage. Alexa came over to help and they double teamed Becky to gain control. Alexa hit a DDT before she and Luchadora left the ring to back up the ramp gloating.
Official contract signing between AJ Styles and John Cena. Daniel Bryan came to the ring to introduce both competitors. AJ complained about how Cena just returns and gets a title match after disappearing for months. Bryan talked up how SmackDown beat Raw in the ratings last week thanks to Styles and Cena. He said the match will go forth at Royal Rumble. Cena tried to speak saying he has respect for AJ, but was interrupted. Styles continued to talk up how Cena is just like The Rock who is a phony and lost his passion. He called Cena a “has been” saying if he loses to him again he doesn’t belong in WWE anymore. He told Cena when it comes to Hollywood he’ll never be as good as The Rock and when it comes to the ring he’ll never be as good as him.
Cena got up and said AJ made the biggest mistake of his life because he pushed him over the line so now he’s going to push back. He told AJ he just lost all respect for him and thinks he’s a little punk bitch. He said when others yap really loud he just makes them eat their words. He talked about how he has passion for the business and said anyone else in his shoes would have already left. He told Styles he’s no different than anyone who chants “Cena sucks” and said they realize on their best day they couldn’t ever be him. He suggested Styles come to the Rumble because he’s still going to kick his ass and take that championship. Cena signed the contract and they started trash talking but Baron Corbin’s music hit and he arrived out with a mic.
Corbin announced as he was getting in the ring that he was letting everyone know he’s the first SmackDown to enter the Rumble and will be the winner. He vowed to become champion at WrestleMania. Cena got in Corbin’s face and told him he’s ready to go. Cena tore off his shirt and shoved the contract table over. As he stepped up to Corbin, AJ blindsided Cena with a big dropkick to put him down. Styles left the ring and Corbin hovered over Cena, trash talking him. Corbin looked out at Styles who backed up the ramp with the title belt.
Carmella defeated Aaliyah via submission. NXT star Aaliyah made her debut on Smackdown. James Ellsworth was ringside for Carmella with the commentators questioning their pairing. Aaliyah gained control late in the match hitting a cross body against Carmella in the corner. She went to follow up with a move from the corner. The ref didn’t see it as Ellsworth grabbed one of Aaliyah’s legs. She dropped down and yelled at Ellsworth, turning her back on Carmella. She took advantage by attacking Carmella from behind and tripping her down into her submission for the win.
American Alpha defeated Breezeango via pinfall in a non-title match. Alpha made quick work of their latest opponents hitting Great Amplitude to get the big win.
Nikki Bella and Natalya had an in-ring confrontation. Nikki talked about how Nattie is using her family name to make herself famous, using the Hart Foundation’s theme music and Bret’s Sharpshooter as her move. Natalya came back with the fact that Nikki is beautiful but beauty fades. She told Nikki once she gets older she’s gonna lose her beauty and die lonely. Nikki got in her face and then shoved Nattie down hard. Natalya stayed face down on the mat as Nikki left the ring and stormed up the ramp. Referees got in the ring to check on Natalya who was slow to get up and holding her head.
Dean Ambrose defeated The Miz via pinfall to win the Intercontinental Championship. Late in the match, Ambrose received multiple kicks from Miz who was mocking Daniel Bryan with it. He went for a big final kick but Ambrose ducked it. He got up and Miz hit a big boot to send Dean to the ropes, but Ambrose came back with his trademark clothesline from the ropes. Moments later, Ambrose knocked Miz to the outside and then flew over the top ropes to crash Miz into the barrier. Maryse came over and slapped Ambrose. The ref was about to DQ Miz for it, but Ambrose got into the ring and argued with the ref to send Maryse away from ringside. The ref agreed to it and told her to head backstage. As Dean watched from in the ring, Miz came in with his title belt and hit Ambrose down from behind. He went for the big pinfall but Ambrose kicked out at three. Moments later, Miz went for a Skullcrushing Finale, but Ambrose countered it and hit a Dirty Deeds to get the win.
