The WWE Battleground 2016 card continues to take shape with more matches revealed for the upcoming pay-per-view in Washington, DC. While the main event will be a Triple Threat for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, several other championship matches are also present on the match card. The latest matches placed on the card will involve the Intercontinental Championship and the United States Championship both being defended at the Verizon Center.
The 7/11/16 Raw episode opened with a huge battle royal to determine a new No. 1 contender for The Miz’s Intercontinental Championship. Darren Young was able to get the win, although he did so simply by being in the ring as the other two competitors eliminated each other together. With that, Young and his new ringside coach, Bob Backlund, are headed to Battleground. Young challenges for the title which he has yet to win in his career.
Also announced on the episode of Raw was a match for the United States Championship. Current champion Rusev is set to defend the title against Zack Ryder. Ryder lost to Sheamus on Monday’s Raw and was then attacked by “The Bulgarian Brute” to further their new feud. This match comes after several unsuccessful attempts by Titus O’Neil to capture the belt from Rusev.
Those two new matches join at least four other matches. They’ll include Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose for the WWE Championship, Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens, Becky Lynch vs. Natalya and then a six-man tag team match. That will feature John Cena teaming with Enzo Amore and Big Cass to challenge AJ Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. Also, The Viper Randy Orton will make his return to WWE as a guest on Chris Jericho’s “Highlight Reel.”
One might expect some sort of match between New Day and The Wyatt Family as well as a possible championship match where Sasha Banks challenges Charlotte for the Women’s title.
Battleground 2016 takes place on Sunday, July 24th from the Verizon Center in Washington, DC.
