Backstage talk recently has revolved around the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the potential for John Cena to have another title run. He’s currently set up to compete against Seth Rollins at Night of Champions, but for the WWE United States Championship. He fought Rollins in a title-for-title match at SummerSlam, which saw celebrity guest host Jon Stewart run into the ring and hit Cena with a chair, causing Rollins to win the US title from Cena.
It appears that with Sting fighting for Rollins’ bigger championship at Night of Champions and Cena facing him for the US title, that Rollins may drop the United States belt to Cena. There had been recent talk of increased merchandise being rolled out which boasts Cena as the U.S. Champion. With that in mind, it seems the bigger title will probably stay with Rollins, while Sheamus has a good shot at taking it away with his Money in the Bank briefcase at some point. Other speculation points to a potential Rollins vs. Triple H clash in the months ahead or at next year’s Mania.
All that said, it appears that Roman Reigns may also be another superstar who is next in line for a championship run, before Cena gets one. Cena would like get the title once again sometime in 2016 to tie Ric Flair’s famous record and maybe eventually break that record as part of his legendary career. Currently, Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins lead all contenders for a win at the 2016 Royal Rumble, which would lead to a title shot at WrestleMania 32. Rounding out the top five are Roman Reigns, Rusev and Kevin Owens with Dean Ambrose and John Cena next.
John Cena last held the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from June 29th of 2014 until August 17th of the same year. Cena won the title during a Money in the Bank Ladder match against Alberto Del Rio, Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt, Cesaro, Roman Reigns and Sheamus. He later dropped the belt to Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2014 ending Cena’s 15th reign as the WWE Champion.
Pro wrestling fans, when do you predict that John Cena will win the WWE title again? Will he beat Ric Flair’s record of title reigns?
