Welcome to the WWE Smackdown results for the Tuesday, August 23, 2016 episode. This week’s installment of the weekly pro wrestling show comes from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Among the stories that will be a part of this episode are the unveiling of two new exclusive championships for Smackdown as well as more of the SummerSlam 2016 fallout. Below are all of the latest results.
Smackdown opens with a backstage shot of Baron Corbin, Rhyno, Erick Rowan and Apollo Crews talking backstage. Dolph Ziggler is shown with his head down in a bad mood. AJ Styles walks in and says he’s the new face of Smackdown after defeating John Cena at SummerSlam. AJ mocks Ziggler and taunts him for losing in the title match. AJ says he doesn’t like losers so Ziggler attacks him. The other guys get involved to hold the two competitors back. Dolph tells AJ to mind his own business and leave him alone.
Out in the arena, Shane welcomes everyone to a historic night. The two exclusive new championship belts are on podiums. Shane says they’ll crown the new Women’s Champion for Smackdown at Backlash in a Six Pack challenge. It will feature Alexa Bliss, Nikki Bella, Becky Lynch, Natalya, Carmella and Naomi.
The new tag titles will be decided at Backlash via a tournament that starts tonight. American Alpha, The Usos, Vaudevillians, Breezango, The Ascension and The Hype Bros are in it. Heath Slater interrupts and says he wants to compete in the tag tournament. He’s told he can earn a contract with Smackdown if he gets a partner and wins the tag title tournament. Slater walks off confident. AJ Styles comes down talking more trash but Ziggler comes out and attacks him before they get pulled apart.
Becky Lynch vs. Alexa Bliss
Becky fought back after Bliss had some control. Becky made a comeback hitting a leg lariat and nails a flying forearm from the corner. Bliss countered with a bomb move for a near fall. Moments later after some more back and forth, Becky applies the Disarm Her for the win.
Winner: Becky Lynch won via submission over Alexa Bliss.
The Usos vs. The Ascension – Tag Team Tournament
Konor and Viktor had control early on and kept it going for most of the match. Eventually, Jey is able to get away and makes the hot tag. Jimmy comes in to take control. He eventually climbs to the top and hits the big splash for the win, advancing the Usos to the next round.
Winners: The Usos won via pinfall over The Ascension to advance in the Tag Team title Tournament.
AJ Styles comes to the ring to cut a promo. He says he’s now the “face that runs the place” after beating Cena at SummerSlam. He tells all of Cena’s fans out there to be fans of his now so they won’t have to root for a loser. Ziggler comes out to interrupt but officials are holding him back. Daniel Bryan says he’s not going to let them ruin this show. He agrees Styles should be No. 1 contender for Ambrose’s title. He books Ziggler vs. Styles tonight and said if Ziggler wins he’ll be added to the match at Backlash making it a Triple Threat.
Carmella vs. Nikki Bella
Prior to the match, Renee Young was in the ring for an interview. She asks Nikki what it means to fight back from her near career-ending injury. Nikki starts to answer but is soon hit down from behind by Carmella. Carmella gets on Nikki and begins to assault her more. Nikki gets up and Carmella takes out her leg from under her for more beatdown. Eventually a referee backs Carmella out of the ring. Carmella’s music plays as Nikki is shown recovering in the ring.
Winner: Match was a no contest, never started.
Randy Orton comes out to the ring saying he bets no one expected to see him here tonight. He talks about having 10 staples in his head after one hell of a fight with Brock Lesnar. He said he knew what he was getting into but would’ve rather gone out on a gurney instead of the way it ended. Orton says one day he and Lesnar will cross paths again. The lights hit and Bray Wyatt comes out.
Wyatt asks him how his head is and laughs about it. He says he saw what Brock did to him Sunday. Wyatt is in his rocking chair saying Orton is a great man, but only a man. Wyatt calls himself a God and says a God can never die. Wyatt says Orton will find out all about him in time. Orton motions for Wyatt to get in the ring for a fight. The lights go out again and when they return the chair is rocking with no Bray Wyatt around.
Backstage, Shane McMahon is speaking to referee Charles Robinson. Charly Caruso walks up and asks Shane for comment on how Stephanie handled Brock Lesnar. Shane said he doesn’t believe Steph is taking it seriously and only fined Brock $500 for what he did at SummerSlam. He says this thing between he and Lesnar is far from over.
American Alpha vs. Breezango – Tag Team Title Tournament
Breezango had control in this one after a commercial break. After returning from break, American Alpha was able to regain the advantage. They went for the Electric Chair double team move but Fandango shoved Gable off the top rope. Breeze rolled up Jordan for a near fall. Breeze countered another move by Jordan and hit a Superkick for another near fall. Gable broke up the pin. There was some more back and forth until Alpha teamed up for a move to get the win. After their victory, they pointed at the tag team title belts.
Winners: American Alpha won via pinfall over Breezango to advance in the Tag Team title tournament.
Dolph Ziggler vs. AJ Styles
In this match, the stipulation for Styles is if he wins, he’s the No. 1 contender and will face Dean Ambrose for the title at Backlash. If Dolph wins, he’s added to the title match at Backlash making it a Triple Threat. Dean Ambrose was on guest commentary for the match. After a commercial break, AJ was in control of things. Ziggler got to his feet with AJ dropping him. He works on Ziggler’s arm which he’s been favoring. Ziggler tries to comeback but Styles knees him in the gut. Ziggler hits a big dropkick to cut off Styles at one point. Both guys are down and the ref counts as they struggle to get up. AJ runs into an elbow from Dolph. Ziggler hits several clotheslines and then a splash on AJ. He followed with a neck breaker and elbow drop for a near fall.
Later, AJ hit a neck breaker of his own into his knee for a near fall. He slams down Ziggler and gets on the apron. Ziggler rolled out of the way to avoid AJ’s springboard move. Ziggler hits a huge DDT and gets a two count. Both guys are slow to get up. AJ tries for a Styles Clash but Dolph kicks out of it. Ziggler ends up hitting a big Zig Zag for another near fall. Ziggler hits a headbutt, but AJ stops his super kick and then hits Styles Clash for a pinfall win. Styles will head to Backlash as the new No. 1 contender to face Ambrose.
Post-match, Styles stands tall with Dolph looking dejected. AJ leaves the ring and goes up to Ambrose, pointing at his title. AJ knocks Ambrose’s headset off. Ambrose gets up to go after him but a ref gets in between them. A stare down closes Smackdown out.
Winner: AJ Styles defeated Dolph Ziggler via pinfall to become No. 1 contender for the WWE World Heavyweight title.
