Welcome to the SmackDown results for the Tuesday, February 28th, 2017 episode. The latest installment of the weekly professional wrestling was held at Xcel Energy Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The episode featured Luke Harper versus AJ Styles to determine who will go on to face Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 33 for the WWE World Heavyweight title. Also on the episode, The Miz hosts MizTV featuring John Cena as his guest. Here are the latest results for SmackDown.
Backstage, Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon were watching a replay of the Battle Royal from last week and determined the ref’s decision stands. AJ Styles showed up to complain about it, but they told him he’s still going to face Luke Harper tonight with the winner going to WrestleMania 33. Styles started to talk trash about Harper who showed up behind him. Bryan and Shane laughed it up and finally, AJ turned to see Harper who stared him down. Styles left the scene. Harper went up and looked at Shane and Bryan then said “Thanks,” before walking out.
SmackDown opened with Miz TV. Maryse and Miz got to the ring and then John Cena was introduced as the guest for the show. Miz had Cena’s cut and talked about how Cena has ruined all of his opportunities because he’s at the top of the ladder. He accused Cena of being jealous of him and said Cena is a hypocrite for reading The Rock the riot act over leaving WWE for Hollywood. The crowd gave John Cena a “you sold out” chant and Miz played along to it. He told Cena everyone sees through it now. Miz said he’s the one who doing all the media and making SmackDown a must see show. He talked about Cena coming back and manipulating his way into the history books. He said Cena took away his opportunity in the battle royal last week, so that’s why he came back in the ring and tossed Cena out, so he’d see how it felt.
Miz finally let them put Cena’s mic back on. He asked if he really had all this power to pull strings and get whatever he wants does Miz really think he’d be in the ring toe-to-toe with him? Cena said “Hell no, I’d be in the ring with Undertaker ahead of WrestleMania.” He accused Miz for stealing The Rock’s personality, then Chris Jericho’s and then Daniel Bryan’s offense and personality.
He told Miz “next time we talk don’t bring a knife to a gun fight, because you’re not The Undertaker, but next time we talk you’ll be a deadman.” Cena dropped the mic and went to leave the ring but Maryse stopped him. She told Cena he’s got too big an ego which usually means, the bigger the ego, the smaller the package. She told Cena if he’s all about respect, to “respect this.” Maryse slapped him in the face.
Cena paced around a bit but then got on the mic and chuckled, “you just made the biggest mistake of your life.” Nikki Bella’s music hit and she came rushing to the ring. Miz and Maryse cleared out. Nikki got on the mic and told Maryse “If you mess with my man, I’m gonna break you b—h.” Cena and Nikki embraced in the ring several times to close out the segment.
Becky Lynch defeated Mickie James 2-1 in a Best 2 out of 3 Falls Match. Becky gained some momentum and hit her straight fire running strike move on Mickie in the corner. Mickie managed to turn things around and hit a huge DDT to plant Becky on the mat for the first pinfall. Mickie continued to maintain control after a commercial break. She showboated a bit too much by climbing out onto the corner and blowing a kiss to the ref, before jumping off. Lynch avoided the move and then was able to roll up Mickie in the schoolgirl pinfall to make it 1-1. Moments later with Becky in control, champion Alexa Bliss came walking down the ramp. She set her belt on the side apron and then got up to argue with the ref. Becky went over to yell at the ref and Alexa. Mickie rushed her and Becky moved causing Mickie to run into Alexa and knock her off. Becky was able to reverse Mickie’s pinfall attempt and put the Disarmer on her for the 2-1 win.
Luke Harper had a backstage promo saying he’s no longer afraid of Bray Wyatt, but when he wins tonight and goes to face him at Mania, Bray will be afraid of him. The Wyatt effect hit and Bray showed up on screen laughing, saying “may the best man win” the match tonight. Bray said he’ll be out there tonight with his blood brother, Randy Orton. Wyatt said he will be the ruler of the kingdom of WrestleMania and held up his championship belt.
Dasha tried to interview Alexa Bliss backstage about her plan to interfere in Becky’s match that backfired. Alexa told her to ask her instead how it feels to be a two-time women’s champion for SmackDown. Natalya showed up to interrupt and told Dasha to give them a moment. Natalya talked up how both she and Alexa had big wins last week, both are beautiful and both are championship caliber. Alexa interrupted asking what she meant. Natalya chuckled and told her this is all about her, until she takes that title away from her.
AJ Styles was interviewed by Renee Young backstage. He said having this match against Harper is bogus but he’s going to go on to main event WrestleMania 33 where he belongs.
AJ Styles defeated Luke Harper via pinfall to become No. 1 contender for Bray Wyatt’s WWE World Heavyweight Championship. AJ Styles was able to hit the Phenomenal Forearm off the ropes, leveling Harper near the bottom ropes area. Styles took the pinfall with Harper getting a leg on the bottom rope just before 3 but the ref still counted it and gave Styles the win. Styles celebrated post-match but Shane McMahon’s music hit and he came down towards the ring saying that Harper’s leg was on the rope so the match would be restarted right now. Styles got frustrated and left the ring after the bell to argue with Shane outside the ring. Harper came over and went to kick Styles but missed and caught Shane instead. Styles pushed Harper into the corner of the ring. Once back inside, AJ hit a 450 splash from the side ropes and got the winning pin again.
Backstage, Renee Young interviewed John Cena and Nikki Bella but before they could speak James Elsworth and Carmella showed up. They were laughing and Nikki asked what they were laughing at. Carmella made James tell Nikki she was a phony. Cena waved at him and asked if he could help him. Nikki and Cena then said they had an idea, next week they’ll have a match against them on SmackDown.
Dolph Ziggler defeated Apollo Crews via pinfall in a Chairs match. Crews hit several big moves late including a splash on a chair on top of Ziggler for a near fall. Later, Crews slammed Dolph backwards onto a chair for another near fall. Dolph managed to trip Crews throat-first into a set up chair in the ring. Moments later, he crotched Crews onto a set up chair and then pinned him for the win.
Bray Wyatt came to the ring for an “Invocation.” He said it didn’t matter if it was Harper or Styles, since they’re both mere mortals. Bray said Styles will feel the spirit of Beezelbub and his master when the bell rings. He talked about coming from hallow ground, a place where Randy Orton is right now. Suddenly, Orton appeared on the big screen from the Wyatt compound. He said Bray gave him the keys to the kingdom. He said this is Bray’s world, but not his. Orton said “if you can’t beat em, join em,” but his expression is “once you join em’ screw em!”
Orton said below the floor he’s standing on is where Sister Abigail is buried. Orton had a pick axe he picked up and put on his shoulder. He asked Bray how long it’s been that the maggots and worms have been eating her flesh and bones. Orton said he sees Wyatt for the first time ever as helpless and naked, stripped of his powers and ready to explode. Orton said in a moment, he’ll be the master and Bray will be the servant. Orton tossed the pick axe down and grabbed a can of gasoline sitting near by then began to douse the inside of the place with it including the rocking chair. Orton declared he’s coming for his title at WrestleMania. He poured a bunch of gasoline down in the floor area that had been torn up by the pick axe.
Orton poured another can of gasoline all over the place as Wyatt got down on his hands and knees crying in the ring. Orton went outside the home and poured more gas around the outside as he shut the door. Wyatt screamed for Randy to not do it as he lit a long match outside the small shack. Orton said he was going to burn the soul of Sister Abigail to eternal damnation. Orton dropped the match and let the house burn up as he watched. Orton struck a pose as the flames rose up. Wyatt threw a fit outside the ring shoving monitors around and crying as he fell down near the announcers table. SmackDown went off the air with Wyatt teary-eyed in a dark arena.
