Welcome to the WWE Raw results for the August 22, 2016 episode of the weekly professional wrestling program. The latest installment of the show comes from Brooklyn, New York just one night after the 2016 SummerSlam pay-per-view. The episode will focus on the breaking news of Finn Balor’s injury and his WWE Universal Championship reign, as well as brand new champion Charlotte, the Roman Reigns vs. Rusev US title fallout and more. Below are all of the match-by-match results and highlights for the latest episode of Raw on USA.
The show opened with Mick Foley and Stephanie McMahon in the ring. They introduced Balor who came out with a sling on his right arm and the championship belt over his other shoulder. He got in the ring as the fans chanted for him. He talked about being hurt but said when he returns to action this will be the first thing he goes after. Mick Foley lifted the title off his shoulder as Balor officially relinquished it.
Foley held up Balor’s good arm and the fans cheered for him. As Balor was leaving up the ramp, Seth Rollins’ music hit and he came walking past Balor. He stopped briefly, looked at Balor and laughed before heading to the ring. Balor glared at him as he went to the ring. Once Rollins was in the ring, he hugged Steph and suggested that he was the true winner at last night’s SummerSlam. He reminded Stephanie of all the great celebrations they’ve had in the past and called it a “beautiful” title belt.
Sami Zayn’s music hit and he came to the ring. Chris Jericho made an entrance, and then Kevin Owens did. Enzo Amore and Big Cass were out next followed by Roman Reigns. Foley said everyone in the ring is deserving of an opportunity at the title. He said they’ll begin a series of matches tonight that will culminate next week with the crowning of the new Universal Champion. Stephanie announced Zayn vs. Rollins as the first match. Owens began trash talking with Zayn and Rollins hit Zayn from behind before kicking him to ringside.
Sami Zayn vs. Seth Rollins – Universal Championship series match #1
Zayn seemed to tweak his ankle during the match and came up holding it several times. Late in the bout, Rollins had a hold on Zayn’s bad ankle. Zayn managed to use his other foot to get away. He went for a Michinoku Driver but Rollins countered it and hit a Pedigree for the win.
Winner: Seth Rollins defeated Sami Zayn via pinfall to advance in the WWE Universal Championship series.
Neville vs. Kevin Owens – Universal Championship series match #2
Chris Jericho was ringside and distracted Neville early, allowing Owens to clothesline Neville before Raw went to break. After break, Neville gained an advantage and hit a corkscrew moonsault for a near fall. Jericho gave Owens another distraction. Owens managed to cut off Neville on the ropes and hit a torture rack into a neckbreaker for the pinfall. Post-match, Jericho and Owens celebrated the win. Cole announced that there will be a Fourway next week to determine the new champion. It will feature Rollins, Owens and the winners of the other two matches in the series tonight.
Winner: Kevin Owens won via pinfall over Neville to advance in the WWE Universal Championship series.
The New Day arrived to the ring with Big E back in the group. They talked about holding the tag titles for 365 days and said it was thanks to the fans’ support. Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson came out. They reminded New Day that they lost last night. Gallows said tonight Anderson will decapitate the muscle that is New Day. Big E said enough of this and tonight it ends. New Day danced in the ring ahead of break.
Big E vs. Karl Anderson
After commercial, the match was in progress with Big E having dominated so far. Anderson was able to land a dropkick to take control of Big E. A bit later, Gallows got involved. Kingston and Woods came over and Gallows took both guys down. Gallows got on the apron but Kingston and Woods rushed over to yank him off and attack. In the ring, Big E hit the Big Ending for the win.
Winner: Big E won via pinfall over Karl Anderson.
Titus O’Neil cut a promo talking about when New Day defeated Prime Time Players for the tag titles it was the best day of his life because he dropped the dead weight of Darren Young. He said Young wouldn’t be relevant if not for him. He said Bob Backlund would make him “great again,” when he never was great to begin with. He called out Young so he could bury him once and for all. Instead Bob Backlund came out. He tried to put his finisher on Titus who escaped it and body slammed Backlund. Young came out to check on Backlund. He asked Titus what’s wrong with him. Titus grabbed him and hit Clash of the Titus.
Tom Phillips spoke with Stephanie backstage about the Brock Lesnar incident at SummerSlam. She said she agrees with Shane that Lesnar crossed the line and there will be repercussions.
Big Cass vs. Rusev – Universal Championship series match #3
Lana introduced Rusev ahead of the match. Enzo and Cass came out with some mic work. During the early part of the match, Rusev seemed to favor his ribs that were hurt in last night’s match against Reigns. After a break, Cass punched at Rusev’s wrapped ribs in the corner. He eventually ran Rusev into the ring steps. Eventually, Rusev left the ring and walked up the ramp to head backstage as he was counted out.
Winner: Big Cass won via countout over Rusev to advance in the Universal Championship series.
They had a backstage interview segment with Jericho and Owens. They each claimed they’d win the Fourway match for the Universal Championship next week. Eventually, Jericho said they’d cross that road next week. First he has to beat Roman Reigns tonight to get to the match.
Women’s Champion Charlotte hit the ring along with Dana Brooke. She talked up being the greatest female athlete in the world. She said she exposed Sasha at SummerSlam as “all flash, no cash.” She said Sasha will never come after her title again. She said when and if she ever gets medically cleared she should never come back since the queen has reclaimed her throne. Mick Foley came out as Charlotte was about to leave.
He said Charlotte was the better woman last night. He said Sasha will get a rematch when she returns. Charlotte said if she does, she’ll break her back again. She told Mick she deserves a night off since there’s no one worthy of facing her. Foley said there are moments of the job that are difficult like making Finn give up the title earlier. He said there’s also moments that bring him joy, such as signing the hottest free agent for the women’s division. Bayley’s music hit and she came out to a large round of cheers.
Bayley talked about how great the moment was and she never thought it would come true. She asked Foley to seal the deal with a hug right here in Brooklyn. Foley and Bayley hugged. Charlotte mocked the idea that Bayley’s the hottest free agent. Bayley told Charlotte she respects her and won’t upstage her but she will challenge her for the title. Charlotte said she’s not dressed for a match but her protege Dana is. Foley agreed to the match for next.
Bayley vs. Dana Brooke
Charlotte was at ringside and provided an early distraction to help Brooke gain control. Later, Bayley hit a spinning elbow off the second rope. She followed up with a Bayley to Belly for the big win.
Winner: Bayley defeated Dana Brooke via pinfall.
Backstage, Sheamus was interviewed about his Best of Seven series with Cesaro with the second match set for next week. He compared Cesaro to “Suicide Squad” since he was full of hype but under delivers. He made fun of New York sports teams and said he’s going to be a winner unlike all of them.
Johnny Knockout vs. Braun Strowman
Saxton interviewed Knockout ahead of the bout to ask why he was doing this. He said “Because I like big, sweaty men.” In the match, Strowman dominated one again. He hit a reverse chokeslam for the win. Post-match he did another big move and made the referee count another pinfall for him.
Winner: Braun Strowman defeated Johnny Knockout via pinfall.
The Dudley Boyz came out to bid farewell to the Raw crowd. They talked up their memories of tag team wrestling including the TLC matches involving Edge and Christian and the Hardy Boys. They said every ladder and every chairshot they’d do it again for their career. Bubba said you don’t always get to go out on your own terms in this industry. He said things didn’t always go how they wanted this year, but being able to say goodbye is on their own terms. D-Von did a “testify” call out with the crowd.
Shining Stars made an entrance to interrupt and called this embarrassing. They called the Dudleys washed up and said they got them a going away present, a trip to Puerto Rico. The Stars kept trash talking so finally the Dudleys attacked them. They hit 3D on Epico and a Whassup move on Primo. Bubba told D-Von to “get the tables.”
Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows rushed down to attack the Dudleys, preventing the table use. They hit a Magic Killer on Bubba on the floor. D-Von charged at them but they got the advantage and put him through a table with Magic Killer. Cole said it seemed like “Driving a stake through the career of the Dudley Boyz.”
Roman Reigns vs. Chris Jericho – Universal Championship series match #4
Towards the end, Kevin Owens ran down to provide a distraction. Reigns went for the Spear, but Jericho got Walls of Jericho on. Reigns powered up and crawled to the bottom rope to break it. Owens got a superkick on Reigns from the outside. Jericho hit a Codebreaker and covered but Reigns kicked out. Owens yelled at the ref and Jericho got frustrated. He slapped Reigns’ face who slapped him back. Reigns hit a Superman Punch to take down Owens. Jericho tried to roll up Reigns, but Reigns rolled onto his feet and then speared Jericho to get the win.
Winner: Roman Reigns defeated Chris Jericho via pinfall to advance in the Universal Championship series.
Next week it will be Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens vs. Seth Rollins vs. Big Cass for the vacant WWE Universal Championship.
